HPSC TerrSys Succeeds in Ideas Competition on International Research Marketing

For the third time, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has honoured marketing concepts for international research as part of an ideas competition. Forschungszentrum Jülich applied for and won one of the top awards, endowed with € 100,000. The award-winning concept concerns the pan-African challenge of soil as a resource and was developed in collaboration with the International Soil Modeling Consortium (ISMC), Geoverbund ABC/J, and the Centre of Excellence High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems (HPSC TerrSys), all of which are located at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The concepts honoured by the ideas competition are set to help increase the international visibility and appeal of German research as well as attracting highly qualified scientists to cooperations or research stays in Germany.

The core of Jülich’s joint initiative is a marketing concept consisting of two complementing measures: a training course on terrestrial modelling using a supercomputer environment and an expansion on the course – a “hackathon” during which software will be further developed. The aim of these activities is to develop a knowledge and technology transfer bridge between Germany and Africa in the fields of soil science, nutrition, and hydrology.

The three main awards and the special start-up award are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). A total of 21 universities and research institutions participated this year.
